HISTORY OF ASHRAE CENTRAL PAKISTAN CHAPTER

ASHRAE Central Pakistan Chapter (189) operates from Lahore, the oldest and historical rich city of Punjab Province of Pakistan. The history of Lahore covers thousands of years. it has since its creation changed hands from Jain, Hindu, Buddhist, Greek, Muslim, Mughal, Afghan, Sikh and the British, thereby becoming the cultural capital and the heart of modern-day Pakistan.

Lahore is the capital of Pakistan province of Punjab and second-most populous city after Karachi and one of Pakistan’s wealthiest cities, with an estimated GDP of $58.14 billion (PPP) as of 2015. Lahore is the largest city, and historic cultural Centre of the Punjab region and one of Pakistan’s most socially liberal, progressive, and cosmopolitan city, known as city of Garden and featured with five-seasons (semi-arid climate), foggy winter (15 Nov – 15 Feb), pleasant spring (16 Feb – 15 April),summer (15 April – June) with dust, rain storms and heat wave periods; rainy monsoon (July – 16 September); and dry autumn (16 September –14 November).

The oldest ASHRAE members in Lahore had been appointed in late 70s. Before the inception of Central Pakistan Chapter, the members were part of the ASHRAE Northern Pakistan Chapter that was operating primarily in Islamabad city, Capital of Pakistan. It was due to the untiring efforts of senior members that the petition by the 48 members for the formation of Central Pakistan Chapter (1st of its kind in Province of Punjab, Pakistan) was formally sent to ASHRAE Society in year 2010 and was subsequently approved in June 28, 2010. Chartering Ceremony was officiated on Feb 23, 2011 by the Past President of ASHRAE Mr. Richard H. Rooley at event of 18th Annual Pakistan HVACR Expo & Conference in Lahore.

Currently the central Pakistan Chapter consists of 83 Members including two ASHRAE life members (Mr. Arshad Sheikh and Mr. Qamar Raza Naqvi) and 79 Student Members. Since ASHRAE focuses a lot on student activities, the chapter started developing interest among the students of leading Universities & Colleges of the city and as a result currently have Eight Student branches.

The chapter had on his honors that Mr. Arshad S. Sheikh, Life Member ASHRAE, received his fellowship award in year 2012. This was only 2nd time that an individual had achieved the feat in Pakistan & 12th time outside America.

The Chapter received ASHRAE Presidential Award of Excellence for year 2014-15, 2016-17, and 2017-18 for outstanding performance throughout the year.
